With the changing global marketplace, economics textbooks are updated often. There are several criteria which separates good economic textbooks from those which will be quickly outdated. As the world economy seems to change as rapidly as technology, this isnt always easy.

Economics 101
One of the major concerns regarding a quality economics textbook is that it covers the human aspect of the economy–not just number crunching. The economy is built upon human decisions–it is a symbiosis that occurs rationally rather than chaotically. This is one of the basic foundations of economic principles that will not change, even as economies weaken or grow.

It is, in fact, in these weaker economies that students can learn the most. As the former Soviet Union switches to a market-based economy, it is a good lesson in how free-market systems are built. It is just as instructive to study a system that has failed as a system that has succeeded.

Government regulation is key to how the economy progresses. In addition, the way governments relate to each other is vital to how economies interrelate–as time goes on, this global relationship is paramount. While this short list cannot possibly cover the many basics in economic studies, no quality textbook will leave out these important issues.

Discount Books: English Textbooks

English textbooks will normally be a collection of works. This is a way to save money from having to buy all of the works separately. So while an anthology may be more expensive than an average textbook, you will be saving money in the long run.

Literary criticism is also a major part of an English major. These usually come in anthology format as well–with writers such as Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and others. One of the values of being an English major is that textbooks are easier to come by, on the whole. Classic novels can be found at the library or for very cheap at online outlets or bookstores.

Choosing a Major
Unfortunately, there have been reports that some students choose their majors based on the expense. Subjects such as chemistry or physics may have lab expenses as well as high-priced textbooks. While English textbooks arent cheap–around $40 on average–they are more affordable than books for these other subjects.

Do not choose your major based on affordability. There are always avenues to find less expensive books. Some students have even been known to share certain rare and expensive textbooks. They form study groups where a rare book is passed around. This is not ideal, but it is a better situation than choosing a subject with which you are not well-suited.

College should be one of the best times of your life. In your adult working life you will not have the same opportunity to study for most of a given day. It would be a shame to have your experience in college to be clouded by too much financial worry. Your mind should be open to new ideas, not open to anxiety about costs.

Unfortunately, this situation is a reality for many college students. There can be a great additional education in a work-study program–a common practice for financial aid programs. Students work in the library, the cafeteria, or other jobs around campus. However, work-study programs do not necessarily cover all of the costs.

Work Study Costs
A work study program is often just used to pay off a loan. In the end, it is even money. It is working for the privilege of studying at a particular institution. However, the money made in a work-study program will not cover outside costs, such as any recreational activities.

In addition, a work study program will not always cover the cost of books. Books are paid for on a cash basis–no different than you were buying a book for your own personal enjoyment. Tuition doesnt cover the cost of books because there is no telling what classes you might take and what books might be assigned. This extra expense can be quite significant to students in a work-study program. Some financial aid programs do cover the cost of textbooks, but this depends on a colleges financial aid budget.

College is one of the most exhilarating as well as one of the more overwhelming times of your life. If youre a freshman, youve left home for the first time–youre learning to live on your own and youre meeting new people every day. Also youre beginning to study subjects with an intensity that you never did in high school.

There are a few basic college supplies you need to get so you can get the most out of the experience. One major tip is to buy your supplies online. This doesnt apply only to books, but to all supplies. Youll cut down on time shopping for supplies, and if you buy all the items from one source you can save money on both shipping and the cost of the items themselves.

College Supply Checklists
Heres a list of college supplies that some new students might overlook. You should budget money for telephone hook-up, internet hook-up and student parking. These days, it is a good idea for college students to get a cellphone–its cheaper than standard telephone service. Also wireless internet makes it much easier to hook-up to the internet in a dorm room.

Some other costs: groceries, and outside activities. Obviously, outside activities are going to be limited somewhat, but a student should not be completely confined by a campus. Buying groceries and making your own food can be a lot cheaper than being on a meal plan. However, the cafeteria setting is a great way to meet people which is very important for a new student.

Discount Books: Compare Textbooks

Some students have been known to compare textbook prices between different classes to determine which classes they are going to take. Imagine if one class had a total of $100, while another had a total of $300. This differential is not unheard of and could be a major burden on many students.

Before you make the rather drastic decision not to take a class, or not buying books for classes you are taking, you should absolutely not go by the retail price of books. There are a lot of things that can affect the price of a book and this could affect the final total. For instance, rarity is a major issue. The more rare a book, the more it will cost, even when used.

In the above example, the $300 in book costs could be shaved considerably if it is comprised of common books. Some of the most popular books can be half as much as their sticker price when you find used copies. Another major factor that affects price is the quality of a used book. Obviously, you want the best quality possible, but if you are really strapped for cash, you can find a book in good to poor condition.

Shop Around
The major point is to shop around. There is no reason you should forgo taking a certain class because supplies are too expensive. Potentially a class which has initial costs of $100 could end up more expensive than a class with $300 in books. If the books are common and you find good deals online, you can save a significant amount of money.
